This Day in History—January 24th
1965-Winston Churchill Passes: While many remember him for his many
victories against the Axis powers in WWII, Mr. Churchill enjoyed a long and
very successful political career. After many years of strokes Mr. Churchill
retired to his lavish home yet remained constant to his social obligations. At
the age of 90, he finally lost his battle against his strokes and Brittan mourned
the loss for more than a week.
Mr. left us with many great quotes, here are 2 of my
favorites:
1986-Voyager 2 makes it to Uranus: Voyager 2 makes contact with the Planet Uranus sending some of the first images of the distant planet. The craft got as close as 50,000 miles from the cloudy top of the planet and discovered many new moons and new rings on its voyage.
Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

1935- Canned beer introduced for the first time: While the
production of canned beer was discussed and attempts had been made by the
American Can Company well before prohibition had even started, it was not until
1935 that it been introduced into the market. American Can Company signed a
deal with Kruger to produce the first beer cans. The trickest part had to be
creating a can that would withstand the pressure of the pasteurization process,
while still creating a product that was affordable. However the true test was
marketing against the public perceptions and realities of a metallic aftertaste
from the can.
To solve this
American Can Company created the “Keglined” can, later to be called the flat
top can. It was able to withstand the required pressures and was internally
sealed to eradicate any metallic tastes. The first set of cans actually had a
written guarantee to try and change public perception. Product testing results came
back with a 91% approval and 85% of people said that it actually tasted more
like a draft beer than currently sold bottled beers.
Shortly after the success of Krueger’s Finest Beer, many
companies started producing canned beer in various shapes.
